Honors

My competition experience over the past years spans diverse fields, ranging from biological research to academic writing.

Korea Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF)

Competed in the national science competition hosted by the Korea Science Service. My research investigated whether epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound found in green tea, could protect brain cells from an Alzheimer’s disease model. I cultured glial cells, treated them with EGCG, and observed improved cell viability under Alzheimer’s disease model, suggesting EGCG’s potential as a neuroprotective agent.

International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition

Participated in the international synthetic biology competition, where I collaborated with team members to design and present innovative biological solutions. Our 2024 project focused on developing a machine learning model to predict the metastatic potential of skin cancer cells, earning a Bronze Medal at the Grand Jamboree in Paris. As the student advisor for the 2025 team, I guided members in preparing deliverables for the Grand Jamboree and contributed to a project that engineered MHC Class I molecules to enhance antigen presentation for improved cancer immunotherapy. Recently, our team received a Silver Medal at the 2025 Grand Jamboree.

Conrad Challenge

Received an Innovator Award for creating a novel food waste recycling system using bacteria and smart farming. Collaborated with team members to develop the final business model.

Emory Pre-College

Received the SOAR Award from the Emory Pre-College Program among around 120 participants. Recognized for leadership and community building, nominated by peers and evaluated by program coordinators.

John Locke Institute Essay Competition

Participated in the John Locke Institute Essay Competition by answering the question “Can happiness be measured?” in the Psychology category and received a Commendation Award.

The New York Times 16th Annual Summer Reading Contest

Participated in the contest by writing a reflection on the article “I, Human,” which explored the relationship between artificial intelligence and education. In my response, I discussed how AI challenges traditional notions of learning, creativity, and individuality in schools, emphasizing the importance of preserving human curiosity in an increasingly digital world.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

Earned the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Bronze Level, through volunteer service and community engagement. Spent over three months cleaning litter around my neighborhood and Gwanggyosan Mountain, reinforcing my belief in shared environmental responsibility. Also completed the Adventurous Journey and Gold Residential Project, strengthening teamwork and service-learning skills.
